Tuesday’s special election in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district was a real nail-biter.
In fact, the margin of votes were so thin, it was too close to call for hours afterward, with Conor Lamb claiming victory in the wee hours of the morning with the tiniest of leads!
On Wednesday afternoon The New York Times finally called it for the Democrat, saying his lead of only 627 votes “appeared insurmountable” as there were not enough absentee ballots left to turn the tide.
Rick Saccone and the GOP plan to contest it, but barring some crazy scandal PA18 has a new Congressman.
This election was important for three big reasons:
1.) Donald Trump won this district by nearly 20 points. This is considered a solid “red” district. A Democrat who ran against the corporate tax cuts, proudly for a woman’s right to choose, and for healthcare for all winning here is another signal, following Doug Jones‘ win in Alabama, of a BLUE WAVE in 2018. And there are over 100 districts up for grabs that aren’t even as traditionally Republican as this one.
2.) Lamb ran a grassroots campaign (see the amazing pics above), knocking on doors and communicating to the people what he was all about. While you may assume in a “red” area, those messages would be lost — but never underestimate the amount we all have in common. Remember, things like Dreamers and common sense gun laws are supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans.
3.) 627 votes! And the final tally could be even closer! NEVER SAY YOUR VOTE DOESN’T MATTER AGAIN!
