Angela Lansbury Is Upset By The Reaction To Her Comments About Sexual Harassment

We’ve upset Angela Lansbury. Entertainment Weekly reports that in a statement released on Wednesday, Angela expressed dismay at the hullabaloo her comments on sexual assault have caused and insists that her words were taken out of context.

Her statement reads:

“There is no excuse whatsoever for men to harass women in an abusive sexual manner. And, I am devastated that anyone should deem me capable of thinking otherwise. Those who have known the quality of my work and the many public statements I have made over the course of my life, must know, that I am a strong supporter of Women’s Rights.”

Oh, Angela darling, all those people are dead now. You’ve outlasted them all! That’s the good news. The bad news is you may have been a right minded feminist and supporter of Women’s Rights for 1957 but it’s 2017 and our understanding and tolerances have changed. Remember when they changed out Jessica’s typewriter for a word processor? It’s kind of like that except the typewriter was the women’s suffrage movement and the word processor was the fight for The ERA. Now we make words on a tiny computer that lives in your pocket! Can you believe it?

Angela cannot believe it, I think because she was horrified to learn that her words were sent electronically all over the world and that other people were able to analyze them and judge immediately before reading the whole thing!

“Lastly, I would like to add that I am troubled by how quickly and brutishly some have taken my comments out of context and attempted to blame my generation, my age, or my mindset, without having read the entirety of what I said.”

Context is a funny thing. I tried to read her full interview in Radio Times but the little newsboy who used to sell it on the corner got cholera and died. And I’m not about to spend the $ 5 bucks or whatever to buy it digitally. But thanks to Twitter, here’s everything she said:

I’m sure Angela will be more cautious in the future when giving interviews which is a shame because the voices and experiences of older women are so needed right now to provide further context for all of us. But seriously Angela, talk to your grand kids and catch up with the Twitter!
